Getting Around London

Do you want to know which are the best means for getting around in London? Our guide will give you precious information on how to move around in London in the cheapest and most comfortable way. London transport’s system is one of the widest and most complex of Europe. It offers three main types of public transport for London: the Underground (the Tube), Buses and Taxis.

General Information

...................................................................................
The cheapest way to travel around London is to buy a one day (or 3 day, weekly or monthly) Travelcard, available from station offices or self-service machines. It enables you to use buses, the underground and suburban trains as much as you like. Travelcards are priced according to the number of zones they cover. Children up to 15 get a 50% reduced price on underground and buses.

Going Underground

...................................................................................
London can be the most crowded city especially at peak times. Apart from walking or taking a taxi, the underground is still the best way to get around in the city. London Tube is one of the most extensive (and expensive) in the world. If you are not using a Travelcard you can buy single tickets from station offices or self service machines. Prices vary from the number of zones you are covering.

On the Buses

...................................................................................
Symbols of the city are Routemaster bus, the old style red double-deckers. There is still plenty of them, but since privatisation and the necessity to modernize services has seen the introduction of modern versions of single-deckers. London buses can be still a comfortable, cheap and enjoyable way of seeing London. Many bus stops display timetables. Mini maps (freely available at any tourist information centre) will help you work out which bus stop you need.

Taking Taxis

...................................................................................
Today London’s famous taxis or black cabs come in all colours, sometimes splashed with advertising. There are different types of taxis, from the oldest to the newest, from cab to mini cab. The latter can be summoned by phone or going to their offices. Licensed taxis are available for hire when their sign on the roof is illuminated, in the streets, in a rank or you can call them by phone service. Cabs operate 24 hours a day. London Taxi fares are metered and can be very expensive. If you are in a group it can be cheaper and the most convenient of London public transport.
